KLEIN, MANNIE

KLEIN, MANNIE (Emmanuel; 1908–1994), U.S. trumpeter. One of the most prolific freelance musicians of the Broadway, big-band, and Hollywood studio era, the New York-born Klein began playing trumpet as a child. Three of his brothers (trumpeter Dave, violinist Sol, and bassist Merrill) were professional musicians, and he eagerly followed their path, performing with B.F. Keith's Boys' Band and the New York Police Junior Band before turning pro in his late teens. A list of the groups with whom he worked is a veritable Who's Who of the era: Red Nichols, Roger Wolfe Kahn, benny goodman , Matty Malneck, the Dorsey Brothers, Lionel Hampton. He dubbed trumpet parts for Montgomery Clift in From Here to Eternity and an ailing ziggy elman in The Benny Goodman Story.
